WHAT ACTUALLY IS A SD CARD AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
In 1999 SanDisk, Matsushita and Toshiba first agreed to develop the SD (Secure Digital) memory card. Currently three versions of SD cards exists and mainly differ in the amount of storage capacity. The Standard capacity card is usually just referred to as SD and has a maximum capacity of 4GB. The High Capacity card is referred to as SDHC and has a capacity range from 4GB to 32GB. The eXtended Capacity cards is referred to as SDXC and has a capacity range from 32GB to 2TB. SD cards are typically formatted as FAT16, SDHC cards as FAT32 and SDXC cards as exFAT. All SD cards essentially use the same NAND storage technology which has also been used in Compact Flash and USB Thumb drives. Recently however due to the small size factor of SD and MicroSD cards they are more frequently engineered as a monolithic chip. Which means a single chip now includes both NAND storage as well as controller functions.
At this time all the leading digital camera manufacturers use SD in their consumer product lines, including: Canon, Casio, Fujifilm, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, and Sony.
